Addiction

Addiction treatment centers, whether drug rehabs or alcohol addiction treatment centers, all work on the same basic premise that addiction is a disease that can be treated and cured. Rather than view this disease as a moral issue, here at A Center for Recovery we believe that we need to treat addiction as a medical issue.

Addiction from a Clinical Perspective

One definition of addiction is that of a physiological or psychological dependency upon (psychoactive substances) that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and temporarily alter the brain’s chemical milieu. As advances are made in addiction science the definition widens to include the repetitive behavior of individuals used to alter the brain’s “normal” state into excitement. This would include addiction to gambling, sex, shoplifting, or other risky behaviors that can stimulate the brain past its primary state. The American Society of Addiction Medicine considers “addiction” to be “…a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.”

To the addict, addiction is a life-threatening cycle of compulsion, humiliation, desperation, reward, and despair.
