Co-Dependency Addiction

In recent years, co-dependency has begun to be treated as a form of addiction. Co-dependency fits the classic pattern of addiction as it is an emotional, behavioral and psychological pattern. Like any other addiction, co-dependency springs from prolonged exposure to dysfunction and is hard to break free from.

The co-dependent begins to associate his or her self-identification by their ability to rescue the addict until they are intrinsically locked with the dependent/addict’s addiction and behavior. Always the rescuer, the co-dependent may have begun the journey out of noble or even forced circumstances and/or desires, but ends it just as confused and disoriented as the addict. They no longer remember how to function outside of the cycle of addiction.

Who’s going to take care of him? What if he slips up again? He’s going to fail…

These are the worries of the co-dependent. Their existence becomes that of care taking for the addict until they become a candidate for therapy and treatment. It is surprising to those unfamiliar how both rage and love can meet in the internal struggle of the co-dependent regardless of the outward demeanor.
